                                                            Prof. Stellah Mukhovi Mikalitsa

The Department of Geography, Population, and Environmental Studies is the largest and oldest geography department in the country having been established in 1956 under the Royal College.  The department has a rich history as a centre for academic excellence in training, research, and consultancy in a wide range of fields related to the disciplines of geography, population, and environmental studies. We have grown from one academic discipline (geography), to environmental studies, and since 2021 as a result of governance reforms our programs expanded to include population studies, monitoring and evaluation, and migration studies due to the merging of academic programs under Population Studies Research Institute (PSRI) with those of Geography and Environmental Studies. We continue to embrace change as we grow in addition to promoting our core values of freedom of thought, professionalism, tolerance, inclusivity, integrity, sustainability and service.

Due to the competitive nature of our programs, our graduates find opportunities in government, both local and international non-governmental organisations, research organisations, and private sector.  Our students also get opportunities to participate in exchange programs with premier universities across the world, access competitive scholarships, and also get recruited in academic fields in universities within and without.  The department has a wealth of partners and collaborators with whom we enjoy mutual benefits and support that steer our growth. Among our partners are; Aarhus University, Denmark African Studies Centre, Netherlands, Centre for Training and Integrated Research in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands Development (CETRAD), Kenya, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China, French Institute for Research in Africa (IFRA), Kenya, Ford Foundation, Kenya, Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, Germany, Kyoto University, Japan, Mitsubishi Corporation, United Nations University, Japan, Linkoping University, Sweden, McGill University, Canada, University of Bern, National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), University of the Fraser Valley, Canada, Wilfrid Laurier University, Canada, among others. We pride ourselves for having a rich pool of qualified academic and technical staff as well as alumni.
