Open Data Day is an event that happens within cities around the world and mostly in countries that have affiliated institutions with OpenStreetMap. OpenStreetMap is a project started in the UK to create free editable maps that can be used by registered members who have grown to 2 million. The theme of this year’s Open Data Day in Nairobi was ‘Everything from Open Data to Crowd sourcing in one session’. The activities during this year’s celebrations were interactive sessions on how to access open data, how to create open data through various platforms, how to use Marathon. All the students present signed up to Open StreetMap and will be trained to help map their environments using readily available technologies such as GPS.
The Open Data Day was an event organized by the OpenStreetMap family from Kenya in partnership with the University of Nairobi, Department of Geography and Environmental Studies Youth mappers club. The event brought together students from the University of Nairobi, other neighboring higher institutions and organizations. The event was graced by the Chairman of the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies Dr. Wambua and the faculty advisor Dr. Stellah Mukhovi. Also present were the former President of Youth mappers, University of Nairobi Chapter, professionals from Data based organizations including the Map Kibera Trust, Esri, Open Street Map (OSM) and IFRC who were the guest speakers for the event.
