DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY AND ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES, UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI PARTICIPATED IN THE INTERNATIONAL WORLD WETLANDS DAY

Kenya celebrated world wetlands day on 2nd February to promote conservation and sustainable utilization of wetlands. The theme for the world wetlands day 2021 was wetlands and water. This year the world wetlands day was celebrated at Sabaki Estruary, Kilifi County organized by NEMA. The day marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on February 2,1971 in the Iranian City of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea

University of Nairobi was represented by the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies in this auspicious occasion at Sabaki Estruary as part of our community service as per the University strategic plan and performance contact. The event was graced by C.S Environment Keriako Tobiko. Other dignitaries included Colombian ambassador to Kenya, Chief administrative secretary environment, County Government of Kilifi, County Commissioner Kilifi, Director Nema among others. During the celebrations that was presided by two days of buildup activities, a total of 100,000 mangroves seedlings were planted at Sabaki Estuary and Mida Creek.
