MASTER OF ARTS (MA) IN GEOGRAPHY AND ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

Overview

MA GEOGRAPHY AND ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

The natural and human environments form the basis for sustainable development and human well-being. They are critical for the realization of the Agenda 2030 and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) especially poverty alleviation, food security, human health, water and sanitation, energy supply and economic development. The natural environment provides industrial raw materials such as minerals, fishery and forestry resources that are utilised for the production of goods throughout the world.

Human activities occur on a geographic stage of great diversity and constant transformation, and these activities depend on the increasingly fragile natural environment and ecosystems. These complex interactions require a critical understanding, analysis and sustainable management. The Geography and Environmental Studies programme adopts a multidisciplinary approach that enables learners to understand and analyse the location, distribution, association and variation of biophysical and human phenomena in space and time (locational and spatial-temporal analysis).

The programme has the following three (3) specialization:

  1. Natural Environment and Development

  2. Human Geography

  3. Development and Environmental Studies

Philosophy of the programme

The philosophy of this programme is to bridge the social sciences, humanities and natural sciences; to offer innovative postgraduate training and research in the diverse fields of geography and environmental studies for sustainable development; and response to the professional needs of public and private sectors.

Rationale of the programme

This programme is cognizant of the need to protect natural and human environments to maintain the ecological balance and sustainability of the ecosystem that forms the basis for human well-being. To understand the complexity of spatial distribution, association and variations of phenomena and their interactions with the environment, there is need to equip learners with better knowledge, skills, attitudes and competencies.

The programme provides the scientific knowledge geared towards contributing to the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), African Union Agenda 2063 and Kenya’s development goals and agendas.
