DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN POPULATION STUDIES (PHD)

Overview

The aim of this program is to provide students with extensive knowledge and skills beyond those they may have acquired at Masters Degree level in order to enable them to pursue careers that require more advanced degree in population studies.

PhD work is by research and thesis

The doctoral program shall last for a minimum of period of 6 semesters and a maximum of 10 semesters. The programme has two options:

           Option 1: Thesis Only

          Option 2: Course work, examination and Thesis

4.1 OPTION 1: STRUCTURE AND DURATION

The thesis will be undertaken in a maximum of ten (10) semesters. Common Regulations for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by thesis only shall apply.

4.2 OPTION 2: STRUCTURE AND DURATION

This programme shall be undertaken through coursework, examination and thesis.

  1. Candidate shall take no less 2 semesters and a maximum of 4 semesters to complete coursework.
  2. The minimum total number of courses taken shall be four (4) including three (3) core courses and 1 elective course.
  3. Each candidate shall write an independent research seminar paper and submit for examination.
  4. Each course shall have forty five (45) contact hours and shall be covered within a semester.
  5. A candidate who does not have sufficient background in demography shall on the approval of PSRI academic board be required to attend certain courses at Masters level.
  6. The thesis shall only be undertaken after completing and passing all the required courses and any other courses as assigned by the Institute’s Postgraduate committee.
  7. The thesis will be undertaken in a maximum of six (6) semesters.

The Common Regulations for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in all Faculties shall be applicable.

 

The following shall be eligible for registration for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Population Studies Research Institute:

  1. A holder of Bachelor's degree of the University of Nairobi.
  2. A holder of Master's degree of the University of Nairobi.
  3. A candidate who has obtained a degree from another University, approved by senate as of comparable academic status.

A holder of Bachelor's degree of the University of Nairobi or A holder of a degree from another University approved by Senate may expect to be registered as a candidate for the Master's degree for initial period of fifteen months after which his registration may be upgraded to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in accordance with the Common Regulations for Master's degrees in all Faculties.
