MA ENVIRONMENTAL PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT

The Master of Arts in Environmental Planning and Management was developed to address the emerging interest in prudent environmental management. This is after the world realized the planet's resources are finite and are continuously depleted at a very high rate hence the need for sustainable development that takes care of the present and future generations. Following the 1992 Rio Summit on Environment and Development that proposed Agenda 21, each country promised to implement sustainable development projects and land use activities that protect and preserve environmental integrity. Such projects require highly trained personnel hence the need for our country to start advanced training on the management of the environment and natural resources

 

Philosophy of the Programme

The philosophy of the programme is to achieve excellence in training students to achieve the highest knowledge in environmental planning and management and participate in promoting green growth/green economy in every aspect of national development.

 

Rationale of the Programme

This programme is cognizant of the need to protect natural and human environments to maintain the ecological balance and sustainability of the ecosystem that forms the basis for human well-being. To understand the complexity of spatial distribution, association and variations of phenomena and their interactions with the environment, there is a need to equip learners with better knowledge, skills, attitudes and competencies.

The programme provides the scientific knowledge geared towards contributing to the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), African Union Agenda 2063 and Kenya’s development goals and agendas.

 

Objectives of the program

The programme intends on;

a) Promoting environmentally sound development strategies within the framework of national development planning and to suggest realistic options.

b) training students to be competent managers and planners of the environment and conservation of natural resources as well as leaders in environmental planning and management

c) equipping graduates with the necessary knowledge and skills to enable them actively participate in the management and research of natural resources that are the resource base of life support systems and our economy

d)Enabling graduates acquire knowledge, skills and attitude to become lead consultants in the key matters of the environment and development.

e) Addressing the need analysis identified from key government specialized institutions after stakeholder discussion and taking note of key major international environmental.

 

Mode of delivery

The program will be offered on the following modes

a) Face-to-Face Mode

This will be offered through didactic lectures, case studies, tutorials, seminars, class discussions and presentations, and fieldwork.

b) Open Distance and e-Learning Mode

This will be offered using a multi-media approach that includes self-instructional print and electronic study materials. This will include interactive study materials and both synchronous and asynchronous modes of learning. Online teaching and learning shall be offered through the Learning Management Systems (LMS) of the University of Nairobi.

c)Blended Learning Mode

This will combine both face-to-face and online learning approaches.

 

Schedule of intakes

The programmes will be admitting applicants once per year during September intake as per the faculty of Arts and Social Sciences guidelines
