2019 Geography & Environmental Studies Undergrad Field Class

Field class is an annual Senate approved mandatory event for all third year geography and environmental studies students. The 2019 field class took place largely in the Coastal regions of Kenya between 31st March and 6th April 2019. The theme of the field class was “Devolution in a changing environment and sustainable utilization of natural resources”. The field class team comprised Dr. John Nyangaga (Coordinator), Dr. Stella Mukhovi and Prof. Sam Owuor.

The class, of 67 students, was divided into seven thematic groups: 1) Economic Activities, Livelihood Strategies and the Environment; 2) Tourism Resources and Wildlife Conservation; 3) Population, Human Settlements and the Environment; 4) Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change; 5) Environmental Governance and Sustainability; 6) Landscape Analysis and Ecosystems Management; and 7) Environmental Change and Sustainability. The programme of the field class is detailed below:

Sunday 31/3/2019: Nairobi – Amboseli – Loitoktok – Taita Taveta – Voi

  • Observation and brief stop: (1) Athi River – Emali – Amboseli; (2) Amboseli – Oloitoktok – Rombo; (3) Rombo – Taita Taiveta – Voi
  • Guided lecture and game drive: Amboseli Game Reserve

  • Lectures with Taita Taveta County Government Officials on (1) Environment and natural resources; (2) Tourism; (3) Water and sanitation; and (4) Agriculture
