Ms. Parita Shah of the Department of Geography & Environmental Studies (DoGES) attended the 2013 summer school on “Global Change and Sustainable Environment”. The summer school, which was held in Côte d’Ivore in September 2013, is an international event coordinated by the Centre for Development and Environment (CDE) of the UniversityofBern, Switzerland.

DoGES graduate students attend a joint international inter-university field course

The Department of Geography & Environmental Studies (DoGES), University of Nairobi, in collaboration with the Centre for Development & Environment (CDE), University of Bern, Switzerland, and the Centre for Research in Arid & Semi-Arid Development (CETRAD), Nanyuki, held a successful inter-university field course on sustainable regional development in Kenya.

On 28th August 2013, the Department of Geography &Environmental Studies hosted graduate students from various countries including Japan, China, Vietnam, Laos and Eritrea who were on an Africa internship as part of their graduate study in Environmental Diplomatic Leader (EDL) education program at University of Tsukuba, Japan.

DoGES hosts staff and students from UNEP-TONGJI University, China

The Department of Geography & Environmental Studies hosted staff and students from UNEP-TONGJI University, Shanghai, China for a one-day seminar on 8th August 2013. The theme of the seminar was “Kenya’s resource base and development challenges”. The visit and seminar was organized by Ms. Frida Nyiva Mutui, Dr. Francis Mwaura and Prof. Elias Ayiemba. Frida is former MA student at the department and a PhD candidate at UNEP-TONGJI University.

DoGES and African Studies Centre, Netherlands, hosts FoodMetres Project Stakeholders Workshop

The Department of Geography & Environmental Studies and the African Studies Centre in Leiden, Netherlands held a one-day project kick-off workshop on 3rd July 2013 at the University of Nairobi (UoN). The two institutions are involved in a collaborative project on “Food Planning and Innovation for Sustainable Metropolitan Regions (FOODMETRES): The Nairobi Case Study”.

DoGES in Official launch of Raja Trust Scholarships

The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies initiated a Memorandum of Understanding between Shah Ranmal Raja Charitable Trust, Kenya and the University of Nairobi for twelve (12) annual scholarships to needy and bright students in geography and environmental studies. The official launch of the “Raja Trust Scholarships” took place on Tuesday 13th August, 2013 at the University of Nairobi.

2013 BA III DoGES field-class

Field-class is an annual event for all third year geography and environmental studies students. The 2013 BA III field-class took place in Nanyuki County and its environs between 9th July and 13th July, 2013. The theme of the field-class was “Harnessing natural resources for ecological integrity, sustainable livelihoods and food security in Laikipia County and its Environs”.

DoGES postgrads, Michael and Belinda, share their experience as exchange students

Two more postgraduate students from the Department of Geography & Environmental Studies benefited from a one-semester exchange programme to the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland. These are Michael Kaelo and Belinda Omungu (middle two in photo). According to Michael and Belinda, “the North-South-South exchange programme was an eye opener and a priceless experience for us.
