Canadian University Students Visit the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies

On Tuesday 16th January 2018, a group of 30 students and professors from Canadian universities including McGill University which is one of the top ranking in the world made a one-day visit to University of Nairobi as part of the Canadian Studies in Africa Program (CFSIA). The visit was part of the traditional one-day annual interaction between the CFSIA group and the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at University of Nairobi. The University of Nairobi was the first place of visit by the CFSIAgroup in East Africa which usually takes them through Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Zanzibar in a period of close to three months.

The group was headed by the CFSIA Academic Director Professor Jon Unruh who was accompanied by Prof. Tim Johns, Prof. Thom Meredith and their local coordinator Ms. Carole Muriuki. The group was officially received by the Chairman of the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at University of Nairobi, Dr. Boniface Wambua accompanied by Dr. Samuel Owuor who is a McGill University alumnus. McGill University was ranked 32nd in the world and 2nd in Canada in the 2018 World University Rankings.

In his welcome remarks, Dr. Wambua called for the strengthening of the collaboration between CFSIA and University of Nairobi. Dr. Samuel Owuor gave a detailed overview of the UoN including the long-standing partnership with McGill University through which a large number of staff in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studiesundertaken staff development training since the 1980s. The training program was funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

Kivuti Karingi, an urban studies specialist in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies gave an orientation lecture on the City of Nairobi after which the CFSIA group undertook their traditional joint tour of the University of Nairobi and the City of Nairobi together with the UoN Geography & Environment Students Society led by Shem Mwangi and Halima Hassan.The visit was organized by Dr. Francis Mwaura who is also a McGill University alumnus.
