In May 2016, Dr. Samuel Owuor (Department of Geography & Environmental Studies), Prof. Paul Ndegwa (School of Biological Sciences), Dr. Joseph Onjala (Institute for Development Studies) and Dr. James Muthomi (Department of Plant Science and Crop Protection), visited the Global South Studies Centre (GSSC) at the University of Cologne in Germany. They were invited to attend a workshop to draft a proposal, together with others, for initiating a Sustainable Development Goals Graduate School in East Africa. The Global South Studies Centre (GSSC) in Cologne was established in 2014 as part of the Germany Excellence Initiative. It brings together research expertise within the University of Cologne in relation to Africa, Asia and Latin America and promotes interdisciplinary cooperation with leading researchers in Germany and abroad. Other collaborating institutions on the proposed Sustainable Development Goals Graduate School in East Africa are International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE, Kenya), University of Bonn and Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences (BRSU).
